JSON to TSV: input and output
A furniture price list whose names and prices contain commas, plus a nested dimensions object and one value containing double quotes.
[
{ "sku": "LMP-220", "name": "Desk lamp, brass", "price": "1,299.00", "dims": { "w_cm": 18, "h_cm": 42 } },
{ "sku": "CHR-014", "name": "Office chair", "price": "349.00", "dims": { "w_cm": 60, "h_cm": 110 }, "note": "Ships \"as-is\"" },
{ "sku": "RUG-088", "name": "Wool rug, 2 x 3 m", "price": "780.00", "dims": { "w_cm": 200, "h_cm": 300 } }
]sku name price dims.w_cm dims.h_cm note
LMP-220 Desk lamp, brass 1,299.00 18 42
CHR-014 Office chair 349.00 60 110 "Ships ""as-is"""
RUG-088 Wool rug, 2 x 3 m 780.00 200 300 Neither "Desk lamp, brass" nor the price 1,299.00 needed quoting because the delimiter is a tab, whereas the note containing double quotes was wrapped in quotes with the inner quotes doubled. The nested dims object became dims.w_cm and dims.h_cm columns, and the rows without a note leave that cell empty.

How JSON to TSV conversion works
The conversion follows the same flattening rules as CSV — one row per object, dot-path columns for nested fields, union header across rows — but separates cells with tab characters instead of commas. Cells containing tabs, quotes, or newlines are quoted; everything else stays raw.
Tabs are the delimiter spreadsheets natively understand on the clipboard: copy the output here and paste straight into Excel or Google Sheets and it lands in columns without an import wizard.
When to convert JSON to TSV
Choose TSV over CSV when your data itself contains commas — addresses, prose, formatted numbers like 1,299 — because the delimiter never collides with content. It's also the friendlier format for clipboard workflows (paste into a spreadsheet just works) and for Unix toolchains where cut and awk default to tab-ish splitting.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about the JSON to TSV.
01How do I paste the TSV output into Excel or Google Sheets?
Copy the output and paste it into cell A1: tab-separated text lands in columns with no import wizard, header row first. The sheet then applies its own typing — 1,299.00 becomes a number, 007 loses its zeros and long digit strings may be shown in scientific notation — so format identifier columns as text after pasting, or use Data → Import for control over types.
02TSV or CSV — which should I use?
CSV is the universal interchange default; use it for files you'll send to other systems. TSV wins when values contain commas, or when the destination is a spreadsheet via copy-paste. The data is identical — only the delimiter changes — and this site converts JSON to both.
03Which cells get quoted in the TSV output?
Only cells that would break a tab-separated line: those containing a tab character, a double quote, or a line break are wrapped in double quotes with any inner quotes doubled, exactly as RFC 4180 does for CSV. Commas are never a reason to quote here, since the delimiter is a tab — a value like 1,299.00 or Lovelace, Ada is written raw. null becomes an empty cell, booleans the text true/false, and the header row is built from flattened dot-path keys in first-seen order.
04Can I convert TSV back to JSON?
Converting TSV back to JSON is lossy in one direction only: numbers and booleans come back as strings unless the importer infers types, and empty cells become null rather than empty strings. The CSV to JSON tool on this site accepts tab-delimited input (choose Tab as the delimiter) and offers type inference, so a round trip through it restores the original document exactly when every field was a string.
