How to Convert Excel to JSON (Without Writing Code)
The data lives in a spreadsheet; the API, fixture, or database wants JSON. Here are the two no-code routes — direct paste and CSV export — plus the typing gotchas that silently corrupt IDs and dates.
In short
Convert Excel or Google Sheets to JSON without code by copying cells (including headers) and pasting them into a CSV-to-JSON converter, or by exporting the sheet as CSV and dropping the file in — either way headers become keys and rows become typed objects. Watch for three gotchas: leading zeros stripped from codes, locale-formatted dates, and formulas replaced by their computed values.
Route 1: copy–paste (fastest)
Select your cells in Excel or Google Sheets — including the header row — copy, paste into our CSV to JSON converter, and convert. Spreadsheets put copied cells on the clipboard as tab-separated text, and the converter auto-detects the delimiter, so the paste just works. Headers become keys; each row becomes one object.
// Pasted rows… // …become typed JSON:
// sku qty price
// KB-75 1 149.99 [
// MS-12 2 39.5 { "sku": "KB-75", "qty": 1, "price": 149.99 },
{ "sku": "MS-12", "qty": 2, "price": 39.5 }
]Route 2: CSV export (best for whole sheets)
File → Save As → CSV (or Download → .csv in Sheets), then load that file into the converter via drag & drop. Use this route for large sheets and when you want a repeatable file-based workflow. One sheet per CSV — Excel's multi-sheet structure doesn't survive CSV, so export each tab you need separately.
The typing gotchas that matter
Conversion auto-types values: numerics become numbers, true/false become booleans. Three cases need attention. Leading zeros — ZIP code 01234 becomes 1234 unless the column is quoted or formatted as text in the spreadsheet first. Dates — Excel may export them in locale formats (6/4/2026); standardize to ISO (2026-06-04) in the sheet before exporting if consumers will parse them. Formulas — exports carry the computed value, not the formula, which is almost always what you want but worth knowing.
Shaping the result
The converter produces what APIs expect: an array of flat objects. Need nesting (an address object per row)? Use dot-path headers in the sheet — address.city, address.zip — convert, and then transform; or post-process the JSON in our editor with the JMESPath filter to reshape and extract. For the reverse trip — JSON back into a spreadsheet — JSON to CSV flattens nested structures into dot-path columns automatically.

Frequently asked questions
Can I convert .xlsx directly without saving as CSV?
Via copy-paste, effectively yes — selecting cells and pasting skips the file entirely and is usually faster than any xlsx importer. For automated pipelines, CSV remains the stable interchange: every tool on both sides understands it.
How do I keep leading zeros in codes and IDs?
Make the column explicitly text in the spreadsheet (format → text, or prefix entries with an apostrophe) before copying/exporting — then the converter sees quoted strings and preserves them. Once a spreadsheet has already coerced 01234 to a number, the zero is gone at the source.
What about multiple sheets or merged cells?
Convert one sheet at a time (CSV has no sheet concept). Unmerge cells first — merged ranges export with blanks that become empty values in rows you probably wanted filled. Clean tabular data in, clean JSON out.
Copy cells straight from Excel or Sheets into the CSV to JSON converter — typed, quoted correctly, ready for your API.
