Example

CSV to HTML: input and output

A pricing sheet with a header containing parentheses, an ampersand in a cell, a quoted field with a comma and HTML tags, and a final row that is one cell short.

Input · CSV
Plan,Price,Storage (GB),Support,Notes
Free,$0,5,Community,
Pro,$9/mo,100,Email & chat,"Most popular, <em>recommended</em>"
Team,$29/mo,1000,Priority
Output · HTML
<table class="data-table">
  <thead>
    <tr>
      <th>Plan</th>
      <th>Price</th>
      <th>Storage (GB)</th>
      <th>Support</th>
      <th>Notes</th>
    </tr>
  </thead>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td>Free</td>
      <td>$0</td>
      <td>5</td>
      <td>Community</td>
      <td></td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>Pro</td>
      <td>$9/mo</td>
      <td>100</td>
      <td>Email &amp; chat</td>
      <td>Most popular, &lt;em&gt;recommended&lt;/em&gt;</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>Team</td>
      <td>$29/mo</td>
      <td>1000</td>
      <td>Priority</td>
      <td></td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

The Team row has only four cells, so its Notes column was padded with an empty <td>. The ampersand in Email & chat and the <em> tags inside the quoted Notes field were escaped so they display as text rather than rendering, and the header names went into <th> cells inside <thead>.

How CSV to HTML conversion works

The first CSV row becomes <th> cells inside <thead>; every following row becomes a <tr> of <td> cells in <tbody>. All cell content is HTML-escaped — &, <, >, quotes — so data can never inject markup, and quoted CSV fields (including commas and line breaks inside quotes) are handled by a real RFC 4180 parser, not a naive split.

The table carries a data-table class as a styling hook and clean two-space indentation, so it reads well in source and drops into docs, CMS pages, or emails without surgery.

When to convert CSV to HTML

Publishing tabular data on a page without a spreadsheet embed: pricing sheets, results tables, documentation matrices. Paste the generated markup into your HTML, style .data-table once in CSS, and you've skipped the tedium (and XSS risk) of hand-writing rows.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the CSV to HTML.

01Does the output include a full <table> element or just the rows?

A complete, standalone <table class="data-table"> element — thead and tbody included, not just the <tr> rows — so it's ready to paste directly into a page's markup with nothing to wrap yourself. Only the CSS (or none at all) is left up to you.

02Can I style the generated table?

The table carries class="data-table", so one CSS rule set (borders, zebra striping, padding) styles every table you generate. The markup is intentionally unopinionated: semantic structure only, zero inline styles to fight.

03What if some rows have more or fewer cells than the header?

The header row fixes the column count. A shorter row is padded with empty <td></td> cells so the table stays rectangular, and any cells beyond the header count are dropped rather than creating an orphan column. Cells are never typed — everything is text — and &, <, > and double quotes are escaped, so a cell reading <b>bold</b> is displayed literally instead of rendering. Single quotes are left alone. Blank lines in the CSV are skipped, and no caption, id or inline styles are added.
