JSON Minifier: input and output

A pretty-printed package manifest — easy to read while you edit it, wasteful once it's just a build artifact.

Input · json
{
  "name": "nv-toolkit-widget",
  "version": "1.4.2",
  "description": "Embeddable widget for the NV Toolkit dashboard",
  "main": "dist/index.js",
  "license": "MIT",
  "dependencies": {
    "preact": "^10.22.0"
  },
  "scripts": {
    "build": "tsc -p .",
    "test": "vitest run"
  }
}
Output · json
{"name":"nv-toolkit-widget","version":"1.4.2","description":"Embeddable widget for the NV Toolkit dashboard","main":"dist/index.js","license":"MIT","dependencies":{"preact":"^10.22.0"},"scripts":{"build":"tsc -p .","test":"vitest run"}}

Minifying removes every space and line break — including inside the nested dependencies and scripts objects — shrinking this manifest from 289 to 236 bytes (about 18% smaller) without changing a single value.

Why minify JSON?

Whitespace is for humans; production systems don't need it. Minified JSON downloads faster, costs less to store and transfer, and parses marginally quicker. For high-traffic APIs, configuration shipped to clients, or documents embedded in HTML, minification is an easy, lossless win.

Because this tool fully parses your document before re-serializing it, minification doubles as validation: if the input isn't valid JSON, you'll get the exact line and column of the problem instead of corrupted output.

Minify vs. compress

Minification removes characters that don't affect meaning; compression (like gzip or Brotli, which your web server applies on the wire) encodes the bytes more densely. They stack: minified JSON compresses to a smaller payload than pretty-printed JSON. Minify at build or response time, and let your CDN handle compression. To see the two effects separately — bytes removed by minifying versus bytes removed by gzip or brotli — paste the same document into the JSON size calculator. If you need the document on one line but still readable, JSON to One Line is the gentler option, and XML Minify does the same job for markup.

Help

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the JSON Minifier.

01What does minifying JSON do?

Minification removes all insignificant whitespace — spaces, tabs, and line breaks — from a JSON document. The data itself is untouched and remains fully valid JSON; it simply occupies fewer bytes, which means faster transfers and smaller storage.

02Does minification change my data?

No. Whitespace between tokens carries no meaning in JSON, so a minified document parses to exactly the same value as the original. Whitespace inside string values is always preserved.

03How much smaller will my JSON get?

It depends on how heavily the input is indented. Typical pretty-printed JSON shrinks by 20–40%. The status bar shows the exact input and output sizes so you can see the savings immediately.

04Is my JSON sent to a server?

No — the minifier runs completely in your browser. Nothing you paste here is uploaded, logged, or stored.
