Every orientation fix in one place
Sideways camera uploads, upside-down scans, mirrored webcam captures, and the subtle two-degree tilt that ruins an otherwise good photo — orientation problems come in flavors, and this tool fixes all of them with quarter turns, mirror flips, and a fine-angle slider with live preview.
Unlike metadata-only fixes that some viewers ignore, the rotation here is applied to the pixels themselves and re-encoded in your browser using the orientation values Exif 2.32 defines. The result displays correctly in every application, and your photo never leaves your machine in the process.
Rotating by an arbitrary angle changes the canvas size
A 90° turn just swaps width and height. Any other angle doesn't: the rotated rectangle's corners swing outside the original frame, so the canvas has to grow to the new bounding box, or corners would be cut off. For a source w × h rotated by θ, the new dimensions are w′ = w·cos θ + h·sin θ and h′ = w·sin θ + h·cos θ — the same formula a layout engine uses to size a rotated element's bounding box.
The table below applies that formula to a 4000×3000 photo at four tilt angles, rounded to the nearest pixel. Past about 10° the canvas growth becomes visually obvious as a wider transparent margin around the rotated image, which is exactly why a small-angle straighten is usually followed by a crop.
| Rotation | New width | New height |
|---|---|---|
| 1° | 4052 px | 3069 px |
| 3.5° | 4176 px | 3239 px |
| 10° | 4460 px | 3649 px |
| 45° | 4950 px | 4950 px |
The eight EXIF orientation values, decoded
Cameras and phones don't always rotate the pixels themselves — many just record which way the sensor was held as one of eight EXIF Orientation values, and leave display software to apply it. A viewer or pipeline stage that skips that flag shows the photo sideways or mirrored even though the file is technically correct. Rotating and flipping here removes the ambiguity by writing the fix into the pixels and shipping no orientation tag at all.
| Value | Meaning | Fix to apply |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Normal | None |
| 2 | Mirrored horizontally | Flip horizontal |
| 3 | Rotated 180° | Rotate 180° |
| 4 | Mirrored vertically | Flip vertical |
| 5 | Mirrored horizontally, then rotated 90° CW | Flip horizontal, then rotate 90° CCW |
| 6 | Rotated 90° CW (camera held rotated left) | Rotate 90° CW |
| 7 | Mirrored horizontally, then rotated 90° CCW | Flip horizontal, then rotate 90° CW |
| 8 | Rotated 90° CCW (camera held rotated right) | Rotate 90° CCW |

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about the Rotate Image.
01How do I rotate an image 90 degrees?
Drop the image and click 90° left or 90° right — the preview updates immediately and repeated clicks keep turning. Use the slider for in-between angles, then Download to save the result.
02Why do my phone photos appear sideways in the first place?
Phones often save the sensor's native orientation and record the intended rotation as EXIF metadata. Software that ignores EXIF shows the photo sideways. Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the actual pixels, so the image displays upright everywhere — EXIF support or not.
03What happens to the corners when I rotate by an odd angle?
The canvas expands to the rotated image's bounding box, so nothing is cut off; the corners around the rotated rectangle become transparent. Export PNG or WebP to keep that transparency, or JPG to flatten it onto white. For a clean rectangular result, follow up with the crop tool.
04What's the difference between flipping and rotating 180°?
Rotating 180° turns the image upside down; flipping mirrors it. Flip horizontal is what you want for mirrored selfies and scanned film; flip vertical mirrors top-to-bottom. They compose — flip plus rotate covers every orientation a scanner can mangle.
05Does rotating change image quality?
90°, 180° and flips are lossless pixel moves — every pixel lands on an exact new grid position, nothing is resampled. An arbitrary angle is different: the rotated bounding box doesn't align to the original pixel grid, so the tool resamples once to fill it. Export as PNG afterward rather than re-rotating a JPG a second time, which would resample twice.
06Why does my photo still open sideways after I rotate it?
The viewer is probably showing a cached copy from before the rotation, or applying a stale EXIF orientation flag left over from the original file. The image this tool exports carries no EXIF at all — the correct orientation is baked into the pixels — so a fresh download in a different viewer, or a hard refresh of the current one, resolves it.
