CSV to YAML: input and output

A conference schedule: titles containing a colon, a comma and a hash, a speaker name with an apostrophe, clock times, numeric and boolean columns, two empty cells and a hyphenated header.

Input · CSV
title,speaker,room,start,seats,recorded,q-and-a
Rust: the basics,Ana O'Brien,Hall A,09:30,120,true,15
"Scaling, safely",Kofi Mensah,Hall B,11:00,80,false,10
Keynote #2,Yuki Sato,Main,14:15,,true,
Output · YAML
- title: "Rust: the basics"
  speaker: "Ana O'Brien"
  room: Hall A
  start: "09:30"
  seats: 120
  recorded: true
  "q-and-a": 15
- title: "Scaling, safely"
  speaker: Kofi Mensah
  room: Hall B
  start: "11:00"
  seats: 80
  recorded: false
  "q-and-a": 10
- title: "Keynote #2"
  speaker: Yuki Sato
  room: Main
  start: "14:15"
  seats: null
  recorded: true
  "q-and-a": null

Rust: the basics, Ana O'Brien, Scaling, safely and Keynote #2 were quoted because a colon, apostrophe, comma or hash would change their meaning in YAML, and the clock times were quoted because they start with a digit. seats 120 and recorded true stayed bare, Hall A needed no quotes, the empty cells became null, and the hyphenated header q-and-a was quoted as a key.

How CSV to YAML conversion works

Each CSV row becomes one dash-prefixed YAML list item whose keys are the header names. Quoted CSV fields are unwrapped correctly, numeric and boolean values arrive typed, and strings are quoted in the YAML only when necessary — when they contain colons, lead with digits, or would be misread as another type.

The result is a YAML sequence of mappings: the exact shape used by test fixtures, seed data files, and list-driven configuration in Ansible and CI matrices.

When to convert CSV to YAML

Test data and fixtures are pleasant to maintain in a spreadsheet but consumed as YAML by frameworks. Convert the export here and commit the YAML — reviewers can actually read the diff. Also handy for bootstrapping configuration lists (users, regions, feature matrices) that start life as a quick sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the CSV to YAML.

01Does the output keep my CSV column order?

Column order in the YAML mapping keys always matches your CSV header's left-to-right order, row by row — there's no reordering or alphabetising step, so a diff between two converted files reflects real changes to the underlying data rather than reshuffled keys.

02Why are some values quoted in the YAML and some not?

The converter quotes only the strings YAML would misinterpret bare: values containing a colon, hash, comma, quote or other indicator character, values with leading or trailing spaces, and values that start with a digit or with true/false/null — so 09:30 and a date stay strings. Everything else stays unquoted for readability, and either way it parses back to identical data. Note that numeric cells are typed before this step, so 007 has already become the number 7.

03How do empty cells, times, and multi-line fields look in the YAML?

An empty cell becomes null. Cells are typed before serialisation, so 120 is a bare number and true a bare boolean, while text YAML could misread is double-quoted: 09:30 and 2026-06-03 (they start with a digit), Rust: the basics (contains a colon) and Ana O'Brien (contains an apostrophe). A quoted CSV field that spans lines becomes a single double-quoted scalar with \n escapes, not a | block. Keys come straight from the header row, and a header like q-and-a is quoted because of the hyphen.

04Does converting back with YAML to CSV restore the exact same rows?

It does when the YAML is still the plain list of flat-ish mappings this page produces. A nested mapping added by hand flattens to dot-path columns just as it would from any other source, but a block scalar (a | multi-line string) introduced by hand comes back as one quoted CSV cell with embedded \n text rather than a literal line break, since a bare newline can't safely sit inside a CSV cell.
