C# Formatter: input and output

An ASP.NET controller flattened by a ticket system: class-level attributes, an expression-bodied constructor, an auto-property with an initializer, and an action method with a LINQ sum and an anonymous-object response.

Input · csharp
using System.Linq;using Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc;
namespace Shop.Api{
[ApiController][Route("api/[controller]")]
public class InvoicesController:ControllerBase{
private readonly IInvoiceRepo _repo;public InvoicesController(IInvoiceRepo repo)=>_repo=repo;
public int PageSize{get;set;}=25;
[HttpGet("{id:int}")]public async Task<IActionResult> Get(int id){var invoice=await _repo.FindAsync(id);if(invoice==null){return NotFound();}var open=invoice.Lines.Where(l=>!l.Paid).Sum(l=>l.Amount);return Ok(new{invoice.Id,Open=open,invoice.DueDate});}
}}
Output · csharp
using System.Linq;
using Microsoft.AspNetCore.Mvc;
namespace Shop.Api {
  [ApiController][Route("api/[controller]")]
  public class InvoicesController: ControllerBase {
    private readonly IInvoiceRepo _repo;
    public InvoicesController(IInvoiceRepo repo) => _repo = repo;
    public int PageSize {
      get;
      set;
    } = 25;
    [HttpGet("{id:int}")] public async Task < IActionResult > Get(int id) {
      var invoice = await _repo.FindAsync(id);
      if (invoice == null) {
        return NotFound();
      }
      var open = invoice.Lines.Where(l => !l.Paid).Sum(l => l.Amount);
      return Ok(new {
        invoice.Id, Open = open, invoice.DueDate
      });
    }
  }
}

The `PageSize` accessors are expanded onto their own lines and `Task<IActionResult>` gains operator spacing, while `[HttpGet]` stays inline with its method — js-beautify sees attributes as array literals.

Formatting C#, properly

C# shares the brace-and-statement structure that js-beautify's token-based re-indentation handles well: this page restores nesting depth and one-statement-per-line layout for any fragment, including properties with get/set accessors, LINQ method chains, lambda expressions, and attribute declarations like [HttpGet] or [ApiController]. Because js-beautify works on tokens rather than a real C# parser, auto-property accessors expand onto their own lines, generic types such as Task<IActionResult> gain spacing around angle brackets, and string interpolation ($"...") needs a small manual fix afterward — all still valid C#, just not canonical Roslyn style. For full .NET-compiler-backed formatting across a solution, dotnet format is the right tool; this page exists for the paste-and-read moment a fragment needs right now.

Reach for this when C# arrives flattened and needs to be read immediately: a snippet pasted from a chat thread or support ticket, output from a decompiler, or a controller action logged as one continuous line. One click restores brace alignment and indentation so the actual structure — which method handles which route, where a LINQ query starts and ends — becomes visible again. It's deliberately scoped to that single moment rather than repo-wide style enforcement: for a whole solution, `dotnet format` applies Roslyn's canonical C# style with analyzer-backed rules this browser-based beautifier doesn't attempt, and the two are meant to complement each other, not compete — beautify here, then run `dotnet format` before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the C# Formatter.

01How do I format C# code here?

Paste your C# (or load a file/URL) and press Format. Like the Java formatter, this page uses js-beautify for instant structural beautification — brace alignment and statement layout restored for any fragment — rather than Roslyn-based canonical style.

02Why not full Roslyn formatting in the browser?

Roslyn is the .NET compiler — faithful C# style enforcement needs it, and it doesn't run client-side. The trade this page makes is deliberate: instant, dependency-free structural beautification for any fragment, with `dotnet format` recommended for repository-wide canonical style.

03How are attributes, interpolated strings and auto-properties handled?

js-beautify reads `[ApiController]` as an array literal, so attributes stay inline before the member they decorate rather than moving to their own line. Auto-property accessors are expanded one per line (`get;` / `set;` / `init;`), and `Task<IActionResult>` gains operator spacing around `<` and `>`, which still compiles. The one construct that breaks is interpolation: `$"Total {x}"` becomes `$ "Total {x}"` because `$` is an identifier character in JavaScript; replacing `$ "` with `$"` afterwards fixes it. Expression-bodied `=>` members and LINQ lambdas format cleanly.
