XML Minifier
Strip every insignificant byte from your XML — smaller payloads for SOAP calls, config files, and storage.
In short
Minify XML online: strip whitespace and line breaks between elements to produce the smallest valid markup. Validates first, shows size savings. Free.

XML Minify: input and output
A weather alert formatted for a human review queue — minify it before it goes back over the wire.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<alert>
<region>Bengaluru Urban</region>
<severity>Moderate</severity>
<headline>Heavy rainfall expected</headline>
<issued>2026-08-14T06:00:00+05:30</issued>
<expires>2026-08-14T18:00:00+05:30</expires>
</alert><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><alert><region>Bengaluru Urban</region><severity>Moderate</severity><headline>Heavy rainfall expected</headline><issued>2026-08-14T06:00:00+05:30</issued><expires>2026-08-14T18:00:00+05:30</expires></alert>Removing the newlines and indentation between elements takes this alert from 261 to 244 characters — every tag and value inside is untouched.

Why minify XML?
Pretty-printed XML pays a byte cost on every transfer — indentation and newlines between elements are pure overhead, and how much depends on nesting depth. A flat, five-field document saves in the single digits; a three-level nested SOAP envelope of similar length saves closer to 15–17%, because every extra level of nesting adds another indented line. For services exchanging thousands of envelopes, configuration shipped with applications, or XML stored in databases, minification is a free, lossless saving.
Because the tool validates before compressing, broken markup is caught with its exact position instead of being silently mangled — minification doubles as a structural check. SOAP envelopes and WSDL contracts minify the same way — the SOAP formatter and WSDL formatter reverse the operation for reading — and XML to String escapes the minified document for embedding in code.
| Document | Before | After | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weather alert — 5 flat fields | 261 B | 244 B | 6.5% |
| Book catalog — 3 nested items | 645 B | 550 B | 14.7% |
| SOAP envelope — 3 nesting levels | 601 B | 502 B | 16.5% |
Minify vs. gzip
They stack. Minification removes characters that carry no meaning; transport compression (gzip/Brotli) then encodes what remains more densely. Minified XML compresses to a smaller wire size than pretty XML, so production pipelines do both: minify at build or response time, compress on the wire.
Help
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about the XML Minify.
01How do I use the XML Minify?
Paste or upload your XML and click Minify. Whitespace and line breaks between elements are removed; the status bar shows input vs output size so the savings are visible immediately.
02Does minifying change my XML's meaning?
Only whitespace BETWEEN elements is removed — whitespace inside text content is significant in XML and is preserved exactly, so the minified document parses to the same infoset as the original.
03Does minifying remove comments and the XML declaration?
Comments, the XML declaration, CDATA sections and any xml:space="preserve" content all survive minification untouched — only whitespace sitting between elements is removed. A comment or CDATA block that itself contains newlines keeps them exactly as written, because minify only strips insignificant whitespace outside markup content, never the content itself.
04Can I minify XML that contains CDATA or xml:space="preserve"?
Minify never rewrites the inside of a CDATA section or an element marked xml:space="preserve" — both are copied through byte-for-byte. Only the whitespace between sibling elements outside those blocks is removed, which is exactly the redundant part a transport format doesn't need.
