Cron Every Day at Noon

0 12 * * *

At 12:00 PM, every day

Open in the cron expression generator

Midday, every day. In cron's 24-hour hour field noon is 12 and midnight is 0, which is the reverse of the 12-hour clock where both are written as twelve. Getting those two confused is the reason a job intended for lunchtime ends up running while everyone is asleep.

Noon is 12, midnight is 0

On a 12-hour clock, midnight is 12 AM and noon is 12 PM — both start with twelve. Cron has no such ambiguity: the hour field counts 0 to 23, so midnight is 0 and noon is 12. Writing 0 0 * * * when you meant lunchtime gives you a midnight job instead, twelve hours off.

The same care applies to the afternoon. 12:30 is 30 12 * * *, but 12:30 AM is 30 0 * * *. When in doubt, paste the expression into the cron expression generator and read the English sentence back before installing it.

When midday beats overnight

Overnight is the default for heavy work, but it is the worst possible time for anything that might fail loudly. A midday job runs while the team is at their desks: a failed import is noticed in minutes rather than at the next morning's standup, and a partial result can be re-run before it matters.

Noon also suits work that depends on the day being half done — mid-day sales snapshots, staffing checks, queue-depth reports, or a sync with a partner system that publishes in the morning. If the job is quick and cheap, the visibility is usually worth more than the marginally lower load at 3 AM.

Variants

Add the midnight run and you get twice a day, the classic 0 0,12 * * * pattern. Restrict the weekday field with 1-5 to skip the weekend. Shift to 30 12 * * * to avoid the top-of-the-hour crowd on a busy host.

If you need several checkpoints through the working day rather than one, a list such as 0 9,12,15,18 * * * or an hourly range like work hours is a better shape than four separate crontab lines.

Build a variant of this schedule with dropdowns and check the next ten runs before you install it.
