Cron example
Cron Every Day at Midnight
Minute zero of hour zero, every day: the classic daily job, and the schedule the daily and midnight shorthands expand to. Twenty-four hours between runs, one execution a day, and — because everyone else picked the same minute — the single most crowded instant on any shared system.

Midnight is busier than it looks
Log rotation, certificate renewals, billing rollups, report generation and half the crontabs on the internet all fire at 00:00. On a shared database or a rate-limited API, that concentration turns a job that takes ninety seconds in testing into one that takes twenty minutes in production, purely from contention.
The fix costs one character: 7 0 * * * or 23 0 * * * is still a daily overnight job, but it starts in an empty minute. If the job talks to an external service, spread further with a per-host offset — many teams derive the minute from a hash of the hostname so each machine picks a stable but different slot.
Midnight and daylight saving
Midnight is safe from DST in most of the world, because transitions usually happen at 2 or 3 AM. But not everywhere: several countries shift at midnight itself, and there 00:00 either does not exist on the spring day or occurs twice on the autumn day, so the daily job is skipped or doubled. Jobs scheduled at 2 AM face the same problem in far more timezones.
The dependable answer is to make the job idempotent — safe to run twice, harmless to miss once — and to run cron in UTC when the exact number of executions matters. A day-boundary job that computes yesterday's totals should also derive that date from a timestamp inside the job rather than assuming the clock, so a delayed start at 00:00:59 cannot land on the wrong side of the boundary.
Other times of day
The hour field is the only thing separating this from every other daily schedule: 0 9 * * * is 9 AM, 0 12 * * * is noon, 0 2 * * * is the traditional maintenance window. Only the hour changes; the shape of the line does not.
For two runs a day rather than one, list both hours, which is what twice a day does. To skip the weekend, restrict the day-of-week field to 1-5. To run at midnight only on the first of the month, pin the day-of-month field to 1.
Build a variant of this schedule with dropdowns and check the next ten runs before you install it.
