What Is a HEIC File? (And Why Your iPhone Photos Won't Open)
You AirDrop a photo to yourself, try to open it on a PC, and Windows shrugs: it's a .heic file. Since 2017, iPhones have saved photos in HEIC by default — a genuinely better format that much of the world still can't open. Here's what HEIC actually is, where it breaks, and the two-minute fix.
In short
HEIC is Apple's default iPhone photo format: a High Efficiency Image Container holding HEVC-compressed images at roughly half the size of an equal-quality JPEG, plus Live Photo motion and depth maps. Windows, older Android devices and many upload forms can't open it because HEVC is patent-licensed, so the practical fix is converting copies to JPG or PNG.
HEIC in plain terms
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) stores photos compressed with HEVC — the H.265 video codec's still-image mode. The result is roughly half the file size of an equivalent-quality JPEG, which is exactly why Apple switched: twice the photos in the same storage. The container also holds things JPEG can't: Live Photo motion, depth maps for portrait mode, and bursts in one file.
Technically, HEIC is the strongest mainstream photo format of its generation. Its problem was never quality — it's that HEVC is patent-encumbered, so support outside the Apple ecosystem arrived late, partially, or behind paywalls.
Where HEIC breaks
Windows 10/11 can't open HEIC out of the box — Microsoft's HEVC Video Extensions cost $0.99 and confuse everyone. Older Android phones, smart TVs, digital photo frames, many web upload forms, WordPress, most email clients, government portals, print shops: no HEIC. Even where it works, it works unevenly — thumbnails render but editors refuse, or vice versa.
This is why 'how to open a HEIC file' is one of the most-searched photo questions every year since 2017. The photos are fine; the world's software just hasn't caught up.
| Aspect | HEIC | JPEG |
|---|---|---|
| Codec | HEVC (H.265) still-image mode | Baseline JPEG |
| Size at equal quality | About half of JPEG | Baseline |
| Extras in the container | Live Photo motion, depth maps, bursts | A single still image |
| Windows 10/11 | Needs the paid HEVC Video Extensions | Opens out of the box |
| Email, forms, print shops | Frequently rejected | Accepted everywhere |
| Licensing | Patent-encumbered (HEVC) | Unencumbered in practice |
The two-minute fix: convert to JPG or PNG
Converting HEIC to JPG makes the photo universally compatible — every device and form made in the last 25 years accepts JPG. Our HEIC to JPG converter does it in batches, entirely in your browser: photos are decoded and re-encoded on your device and never uploaded, which matters more for personal photos than for anything else you'll ever convert. Need transparency or lossless output for editing? HEIC to PNG does the same job.
Keep the HEIC originals if storage allows — they're your highest-quality masters. Convert copies for sharing and uploading — and if an upload form has a size limit, the image compressor shrinks those JPGs further.
Stop the problem at the source (optional)
If HEIC keeps biting you, your iPhone can shoot JPEG directly: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. The cost is roughly double the storage per photo, and you lose the fancy extras like full Live Photo fidelity. 'High Efficiency' (HEIC) remains the right choice if you mostly share within the Apple ecosystem or via apps — iMessage, WhatsApp and Instagram convert automatically when needed.
There's also a half-way setting most people miss: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic, which converts to JPEG during USB transfer while keeping HEIC on the phone.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
Marginally — JPG re-encodes the image, and at high quality the difference is invisible in normal use. The conversion is one deliberate pass, not a destructive cycle. For zero-loss output (at much larger file sizes), convert to PNG instead.
Why does Windows want me to pay for HEVC extensions?
HEVC decoding is patent-licensed, and Microsoft passes the royalty on as the $0.99 'HEVC Video Extensions' app. Converting your photos to JPG sidesteps the whole question — and works on every Windows machine you'll ever touch, including ones you don't control.
Is HEIC better than JPEG?
As a format, yes — about half the size at equal quality, plus 10-bit color, transparency and depth-map support. As a file you need to share, it's worse, because compatibility beats efficiency the moment the photo leaves Apple's ecosystem. Shoot HEIC, share JPG.
Drop your iPhone photos in — batch conversion in your browser, with per-file progress. Your photos are never uploaded anywhere.
