Stylus to CSS: input and output

A chip in minimal Stylus — no colons, no braces, bare variable references — with a hover state, a nested .remove button and a media query.

Stylus input
chip-bg = #eef2ff
chip-pad = 4px
.chip
  display inline-flex
  gap chip-pad
  padding chip-pad 12px
  border-radius 999px
  background chip-bg
  &:hover
    background #e0e7ff
  .remove
    margin-left chip-pad
  @media (max-width: 480px)
    padding 2px 8px
CSS output
.chip {
  display: inline-flex;
  gap: 4px;
  padding: 4px 12px;
  border-radius: 999px;
  background: #eef2ff;
}
.chip:hover {
  background: #e0e7ff;
}
.chip .remove {
  margin-left: 4px;
}
@media (max-width: 480px) {
  .chip {
    padding: 2px 8px;
  }
}

Both bare variables are resolved (gap: 4px; padding: 4px 12px; background: #eef2ff), colons are restored on every declaration, and the @media block is lifted to the top of the sheet as @media (max-width: 480px) { .chip { … } }.

From Stylus to CSS: what maps

Source: Stylus — the minimal indented dialect where even colons are optional. Target: plain CSS — the universal target every browser parses. Stylus's minimal lines (optional colons, bare or = variables) normalize into declarations, variables resolve, nesting flattens — standard CSS out.

The converter works on a parsed rule tree rather than regex find-replace, which is why nesting depth, selector grouping with commas, & parent references, and @media blocks survive conversion intact.

When teams convert Stylus to CSS

Stylus's tolerance is wonderful to write and painful to leave — which is exactly why projects leave it: every new contributor must learn which punctuation is optional, and tooling support has thinned. Compiling to plain CSS retires the dialect entirely; for sites built when Stylus peaked, this conversion plus native CSS variables is the whole modernization.

Help

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the Stylus to CSS.

01How do I convert Stylus to CSS?

Paste your Stylus (or load a file) and press Convert — the stylesheet is parsed into a rule tree and re-emitted as CSS. Copy the result or download it with the right extension.

02How are Stylus's 'prop value' lines (no colon) handled?

The parser recognizes property-value pairs by pattern and restores the colon CSS requires. '=' variable assignments are likewise normalized before substitution.

03How are bare variable references and nested @media resolved from Stylus?

chip-bg = #eef2ff is recognised as an assignment and stored as a variable; every bare use of that name inside a value is then rewritten with a word-boundary-aware match, so gap chip-pad resolves while border-radius is never mistaken for a radius variable. After substitution the definitions are dropped, nesting flattens (&:hover to .chip:hover, .remove to .chip .remove), and an @media block written inside .chip is hoisted to the top level with its rules re-targeted to the full selector. Comments are removed and the result is prettier-formatted CSS.
