Cron example
Cron Every Weekday at 9 AM
Nine in the morning, Monday through Friday. The last field is the day of week, where 0 is Sunday and the numbers run up to 6 for Saturday, so 1-5 is the working week. This is the most-used weekday schedule on the internet: standup reminders, morning reports and daily digests all live here.

How cron numbers the week
Cron's week starts on Sunday: 0 is Sunday, 1 Monday, 2 Tuesday, 3 Wednesday, 4 Thursday, 5 Friday and 6 Saturday. Most implementations also accept 7 as an alias for Sunday, which exists purely so that ranges like 1-7 do not surprise people. Vixie cron and most modern parsers additionally accept three-letter names, so 0 9 * * MON-FRI is the same schedule spelled more legibly.
The off-by-one danger is real. In many programming languages and in ISO 8601, Monday is day 1 and Sunday is day 7 — cron agrees about Monday but not about Sunday. If a weekend job unexpectedly runs on Saturday only, or a Monday job fires on Sunday, the numbering convention is the first thing to check.
Weekdays are not business days
Cron has no concept of public holidays, company shutdowns or regional calendars. A schedule of 1-5 fires on New Year's Day, on Christmas if it falls midweek, and during the week your office is closed. If that matters — payroll, invoicing, SLA reporting — the guard has to live in the command, checking a holiday calendar and exiting quietly when it is not a business day.
The same applies to teams whose working week is not Monday to Friday. Sunday-to-Thursday weeks are written 0 9 * * 0-4, and a six-day week is 0 9 * * 0-5. The field is just a set of day numbers; nothing about it is culturally fixed.
Adjusting the time
Move the minute for a non-round start, as in 8:30 Monday to Friday. Add a second hour to the list — 0 9,17 * * 1-5 — for a start-of-day and end-of-day pair. Widen to a range for hourly coverage during work hours.
If the same job should also run at weekends, dropping the day-of-week restriction gives you every day at 9 AM. Keep in mind that the daemon's timezone decides which 9 AM this is; for a distributed team, set CRON_TZ explicitly rather than relying on the host.
Build a variant of this schedule with dropdowns and check the next ten runs before you install it.
